Emily Widdas, interior designer and founder of Arlem

ABOUT

Emily Widdas.

I’m an interior designer based in Adelaide. I work with people who want their home to feel calm and considered, without the noise that usually comes with styling it. The work is restrained on purpose. A room shouldn’t feel finished the day it’s installed. It should feel right the day you live in it.

PRACTICE

Practice.

Arlem is a small practice. I take on a handful of projects at a time so each one gets the attention it needs. Most of my clients are Adelaide homeowners who’ve lived in the house long enough to know what isn’t working, and want a steady hand to help them fix it without starting from scratch.

The process starts with a walk-through. I ask how you actually use the room, what you keep meaning to deal with, and what you’d like to feel when you walk in. From there I put together a plan: palette, key furniture, soft layers, lighting. Nothing is purchased until you’ve signed off.

I source from a mix of independent makers, local trade suppliers, and considered mainstream pieces. Budget is a constraint I work with openly. The goal is a room that looks intentional, not a room that looks expensive.

ALSO

Arlem the Label.

Alongside the interior design practice, I run Arlem the Label, a small bedhead cushion brand. It started because I wanted a single soft piece behind my own bed that didn’t involve a pile of decorative pillows, and couldn’t find one I liked.

The two practices feed each other. The cushions live in nearly every bedroom I style, and the styling work tells me what people actually need in their homes.
